Outdoor Adventures Near Fayetteville

One of the major benefits of living in Fayetteville is having easy access to stunning landscapes and outdoor adventures. The Cape Fear River and its many tributaries provide Fayetteville locals with many opportunities for water sports such as fishing, swimming, rafting, and more. Located on North Carolina's coastal plain, the topography around Fayetteville tends to be flat when compared to the state's western region, which is a part of the Appalachian Mountain region. That means that, as you're exploring the landscapes around Fayetteville, you will see signs that you are moving closer to the ocean, such as the forests' sandy understory.

Our team at Stone Ridge Apartment Homes wants to help you find your next outdoor adventure near Fayetteville, which is why we compiled this list of our five favorites.

Carvers Creek State Park

Just north of the city, Carvers Creek State Park is one of Fayetteville's most serene nature getaways. The park features shaded walking trails, a picturesque millpond, prime birdwatching opportunities, scenic picnic spots, and the historic Rockefeller House, which was once the home of James Stillman Rockefeller. Sitting on an untouched stretch of longleaf pine forest, Carvers Creek State Park is the perfect destination for anyone who wants to reconnect with nature without driving very from town. Residents of Stone Ridge Apartment Homes are just a twenty-five-minute drive away from both Carvers Creek's main entrance and the southern access point.

J. Bayard Clark Park & Nature Center

J. Bayard Clark Park & Nature Center is a riverside park and woodland area that combines hiking trails with an immersive educational experience where visitors can learn about North Carolina plants and wildlife. The park also connects to the Cape Fear River Trail, a 5.5-mile paved path that winds through beautiful forests and offers stunning river views along the way. Best of all, the park and nature center are located just ten minutes north of downtown Fayetteville.

Lake Rim Park

Tennis, volleyball, fishing, horseshoes, and kayaking are just some activities that you’ll find at Lake Rim Park. This multifaceted outdoor center, located just outside of Fayetteville on the southern edge of Lake Rim, provides locals with a welcome escape from the city. Visitors can spend the day playing a range of games or venture out to the lake for kayaking, canoeing, or fishing. Designated as a public fishing area, Lake Rim is stocked with largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish.

Deep Creek ATV Park

For those who enjoy nature best from the seat of an ATV, Deep Creek ATV Park provides 2,500 acres of excellent off-road terrain designed for ATV and dirt bike riders. Located just north of town, the park is filled with first-class trails that range from beginner-friendly to challenging. Visitors can also extend the fun by staying at one of the park’s campgrounds for an evening or two. Deep Creek ATV is known as one of the Southeast’s premier destinations for off-road trail riding.

Cape Fear Botanical Garden

Known as one of Fayetteville’s “must-sees,” Cape Fear Botanical Garden offers an impressive tour through themed gardens that inspire the mind and enliven the senses. Founded in 1989, the 80-acres of gardens are tucked between the Cape Fear River and Cross Creek outside of downtown Fayetteville. The Camellia Garden, Daylily Garden, Shade Garden, and Butterfly Stroll are just some of Cape Fear Botanical Garden’s amazing offerings. Throughout the year, the garden also hosts seasonal events like spring flower festivals and holiday light displays during the winter.

Activities in Fayetteville

If you’re more of a city person and prefer the great indoors to the great outdoors, then here are some activities that will help you explore the All-American City.

U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum

Founded in 2000 on the 60th anniversary of the original Parachute Test Platoon’s first jump, the U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum is recognized as Fayetteville’s most popular attraction. Inside, visitors will find state-of-the-art exhibits covering military history from World War II through the modern-day war on terrorism. This includes authentic aircrafts, helicopters, ground vehicles, and the actual wreckage of the Black Hawk helicopter that went down in Mogadishu, a tragedy that was made into the popular film “Black Hawk Down.” If there’s one museum you need to see in Fayetteville, this is it.

Cape Fear Regional Theatre

Located downtown on Hay Street, the Cape Fear Regional Theatre has been entertaining Fayetteville since 1962. The theater has become a beloved cultural institution, offering a rotating lineup of productions throughout the year that range from traditional dramatic productions to whimsical musicals. Cape Fear is also home to a comprehensive educational program where students can learn about and practice the dramatic arts. Stay tuned to the CFRT website for an up-to-date event calendar.

Fayetteville Woodpeckers at Segra Stadium

One of the best ways to spend an evening in Fayetteville is by catching a Fayetteville Woodpeckers baseball game at Segra Stadium. The 4,600-seat stadium sits in the heart of downtown and is home to Woodpeckers, a Single-A feeder team for the Houston Astros. The atmosphere during a Woodpeckers game is electric and provides locals with an opportunity to watch up-and-coming baseball stars at their best. The baseball season runs from April through September.

Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex

When it comes to local history, the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex is the place to go. Spread across seven acres, the complex includes the main museum building, the 1897 Poe House, the 1840 Culbreth House, and Arsenal Park, which contains the ruins of a Civil War-era military arsenal. Spanning over 400 years of history, the Museum of Cape Fear paints a vivid picture of the major events that impacted Fayetteville and the state of North Carolina.

Farmers Markets

There’s nothing better than spending a morning at the farmers market buying fresh ingredients, listening to local artists share their music, and supporting the farmers and ranchers from the surrounding region. Fayetteville has multiple options when it comes to farmers markets. The year-round City Market at the Museum runs on Saturday mornings, while the Dirtbag Ales Farmers Market operates from April through Thanksgiving. Also, the Downtown District Summer Market brings local vendors together during the warmer months. The local farmers market scene is the perfect way to experience Fayetteville’s one-of-a-kind community.
